The
Arbutus Tree |
 |
| The
Arbutus is a beautiful and unusual tree found almost only in the
Pacific north-west, in particular on the west coast of Vancouver
Island. Its yellowish-green bark gradually turns to a rich reddish-brown
during the summer and peels off like a layer of paper. It is deciduous
but never without leaves, even in the winter – the glossy dark green
leaves fall during the spring as new ones appear.
It
thrives in harsh conditions, and grows close to the ocean facing
the wet and snow in winter and parched conditions in summer. It
is found on rocky headlands clinging to clefts in the rock and often
growing in tortuous shapes to find the sunlight among other trees.
As
its name indicates, Arbutus Cove has a large concentration of Arbutus
trees, and they are found throughout the coastal areas around Victoria
and the west coast of Vancouver Island. For more information about
them,
